Have you heard the term and are wondering what an action board is? If a vision board isn’t helping you to achieve your goals, you might be thinking that visualization and manifestation aren’t for you.

Will you give it one more try, for our sake?

In this post, we’ll be covering the differences between an action board and a vision board, and helping you to create the most amazing one of all, that supercharges you and gets you on the road to success with all your goals.

Vision boards are so 2015, an action board is the new and improved version you need.

What Are The Differences Between An Action Board And A Vision Board?

It’s quite easy to define what the differences between action boards and vision boards are because they both do exactly as they say on the tin.

A traditional vision board is something most people are familiar with, and you probably started creating them when you were a child.

Traditionally, you would find images, be it from the internet, magazines, etc, of the vision you have for your life, a life that you wanted to create ‘one day’. For example, you might have had an image of the Taj Mahal if you wanted to backpack around India one day.

The key takeaway from a vision board is that it’s all about ‘one day’, which from a manifestation point of view isn’t very helpful in achieving your dream life.

While it’s wonderful to be so clear about what you want from life, without dated goals or a plan of action in place to achieve, unfortunately, those dreams often stay in the realm of ‘one day’, until, ultimately it’s too late.

An action board, on the other hand, is the meatier, big brother of a vision board, that packs more of a punch. It starts off similarly to a vision board, with images of what you wish to achieve, but unlike a vision board, each image has a call to action assigned to it.

If you’re someone who likes having a to-do list, you could also write one of these, to accompany the action board, and we encourage you to do so.

The more you can break your goals down, you’ll see how much easier they are to achieve, and they will no longer seem big and scary.

For example, if the goal was to backpack around India, the call to action could be to save $6000 in the next 6 months.

And, if you wanted to go more in-depth with a supporting, detailed task list, you might include how you’re going to save the money, be it through a second job, or sacrificing events with friends, as well as which date you’ll book a ticket, places you want to visit en-route, and who you’ll travel with.

On the action board itself, your call to action should be clear and concise to help you do exactly what it says
take action!

Do Vision Boards Work?

Vision boards have been used as a manifestation tool for years. They help to turn the thoughts in your head into something tangible.

Using manifestation to achieve your dream life really does work. The book ‘The Secret’ which is widely known as the most popular book about the law of attraction, speaks about visualization like this
”The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualizing, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe.”

The thing that stops vision boards from working for a lot of people is that they think it’s enough.

It is important to take time to create the perfect vision board that depicts exactly what you want in as much clarity as possible, and you should also make sure it’s in a visible location that you will see multiple times a day, but if you’ve just been peeking at your vision board every day and hoping for a change without seeing any results, you might want to switch it out for an action board.

Do Action Boards Work?

Where vision boards are lacking, action boards will help drive you toward your goals and inspire the necessary changes you need in order to get there.

Anyone who is interested in the law of attraction will tell you that, contrary to popular belief, manifestation doesn’t work by simply picturing what you want and waiting for the universe to provide it.

While it is important to be extremely focused on your desires, manifestation works by providing opportunities to work towards your goals, and inspiring you to take the action needed to pivot your life in the right direction.

Those who use the law of attraction see everything as a sign and know that the universe is working for them, rather than against them. It is these signs or opportunities that create great change because the person manifesting is willing to put in the work.

The calls to action on an action board inspire just that. By dating a goal, or using another black and white call to action, you will start to feel the clock ticking on your visions, and begin to make changes in your life.

An action board doesn’t stop you from visualizing, and it’s still an essential part of it, but an action board is suitable for anyone who has the vision but is struggling to bring it to reality.

When they dig deeper, lots of people find that it’s the fear of failure that holds them back from creating the life of their dreams. That sneaky little voice in the back of everyone’s head that likes to pop up from time to time just to say “you can’t do that” is something we all struggle with occasionally.

When you mix that fear of failure with the overwhelm that comes from having a vision for your life that is completely different from your reality, and having absolutely NO IDEA how to get there, most people give up, thinking that their visions weren’t meant for them.

This is definitely not the case. Your visions are just that. YOURS. I don’t have visions of becoming the first woman to walk on the moon, because it is just not meant for me.

If you can strongly visualize it, it’s because it is meant for you, and an action board will help you to realize that fact, and spring into action without fear or overwhelm, by breaking your visions down into more manageable goals.

How To Make A Vision Board (That Actually Works)

Now we’ve answered the question of “do vision board work?”, let’s get into making one. When it comes to how to make an action board, it should be very personal to you.

Some people prefer to create a traditional board or collage with images found in magazines or online and hang it in a space where they’ll see it often, for example, in their office.

For others, an online action board works better for them, where they can use their vision as a desktop background and see it many times a day as they work. If you’re an avid journaler, another way you could choose to create an action board is within a journal.

You know yourself, and which of these methods will work best for you, but in this post, we’ll be focusing more on a traditional action board, however, if you’re choosing a different method, you can still use almost all of our tips.

Whichever way you choose to create your action board, take time when choosing your images to ensure that they reflect your vision as closely as possible.

Google is a great place to find images, as well as stock photo websites such as Unsplash or Pexels. Pinterest is another great resource, as it’s basically one big online vision board.

If, once you’ve found all of your images, they don’t resonate with you, don’t just settle for it. Start again until every single image aligns deeply with you.

Once you’ve found your images, group them together into categories such as work, family, or home. Use a poster-sized piece of foam core or pinboard that you can hang on the wall.

A cork pinboard is ideal as it doesn’t require you to glue anything down, meaning you can change your action board as your goals change, or if an aspect of it doesn’t seem quite right after a couple of days.

After you’ve done this, the real work begins. For each image, assign a call to action. Using our example of a backpacking trip to India, you might use “save $1000 per month until June” as the call to action that you write down.

You can choose to write this normally, or if you want your board to look more aesthetically pleasing, you could type it up and print it out.

Make sure that your goal is achievable but challenging. For example, “save $1 million by June” is unrealistic unless you suddenly win the Powerball.

Once you’ve done this for all of your goals, add them to your action board, and voila, your action board is complete.

We’d recommend, once you’ve done this, to use a journal to write down your plan of action, breaking down these calls to action. Here’s an example of a plan of action:

Call to action: Save $1000 per month until June

Plan of action:

  • Apply to 5 part-time delivery driver jobs every week, to increase income with a second job.
  • Limit nights out to one per month, with a budget of $50.
  • Cook dinner from scratch every night. No takeout.
  • Sell unused items around the house for additional funds.

At first, saving an extra $1000 per month might seem unmanageable, but once broken down into clear steps, you can see that it’s easy to achieve.
