Interview with Jakub, SEO content manager
Why did you want to become a digital nomad?
At that time I was working for an international IT company, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. As in every corporate environment, I was only a number. My tasks were boring and I didn’t see any purpose in them. Furthermore, I had a boss that wasn’t a leader and certainly not someone I could look up to. I simply did not enjoy working in a 9 to 5 job. I wanted to become independent of the location and time.
How did you get started and how long have you been on the road for?
I quit my “normal” job without any concrete plan. I just had the feeling it was the right thing to do. I applied to several marketing jobs, although I didn’t have much luck finding anything “remote-friendly”.
At the time, I was working on my dad’s website and I was looking for some information about Google Ads. I stumbled across a blog from an agency that happened to look for someone to join their team. I applied and landed the job.Â
It took me roughly six months to be comfortable enough to leave my “home” and become a full-time digital nomad.Â
How long did it take you to make a decent income?
Everyone has a different understanding of a “decent” income. I earned around EUR 1,500 when I first left my home base. Two years later, I make on average around EUR 3,000 before taxes.Â
I don’t know if that’s decent or not. As from my perspective, there isn’t a roof when it comes to earning money. For me, it’s not about how much I earn but how much I am able to invest.Â
EUR 3,000 a month is enough to live but it isn’t enough to save up for a house or drastically expand your business. As a digital nomad, I often change destinations. My expenses on transportation and accommodation are therefore significantly higher than for most people who have a long-term base.
How did you land your first job as a digital nomad?
I am mainly working on one large project while running a few small projects on the side. I landed the project through a friend I met in Berlin a few years ago. We had a call, a few months after I quit my corporate job and he happened to look for someone who was good at languages and interested in finance.Â
Nowadays, I create content in the finance niche. I also do a few other things, but this is my main focus.
Did you take any courses or did you use FREE resources online?
I sure did. I remember participating in two courses on Udemy. One was about Cryptocurrencies and one about E-Mail Marketing. I can’t remember too much from those, so I guess they weren’t very good, but it was a good starting point.
There are tons of resources online about almost anything. As I do a lot of Search Engine Optimization I consume a lot of content about online marketing in general.
I follow a few sites such as the Moz Blog, Ahrefs Youtube channel or Brian’s blog at backlinko.com. I also used to follow Neil Patel too. It’s a great source of information for people who are starting out rather than experienced online marketers.
Regardless of the niche, you are working in, there is always going to be FREE resources that you can use to learn new skills. I think at the moment, YouTube is the best way to get started.
