If you’re staring at your about me page and you feel like if you have no clue how to get started, this post will help you understand how to write an about me page.
Not only it will give you inspiration, but it will also help you figure out what should be included on this page. I’ll make sure to add examples too.
Writing a great about me page shouldn’t be too hard – because it’s not really about you.
But, first, let’s starts with the basics.
What is an About Me Page?
An about page (or about us page) is an important page for your website. It tells your users who you are and why they should trust you. Google values authority and trust, and having an about me page is a way to show that you are trustworthy and you’re a real person (ideally an expert) about your niche.
If you provide any kind of services, prospective clients will take a look at your about me page. It’s the best way to learn about you and what you do.
Why is an About Me Page Important?
If you’re wondering if you need an about me page, the answer is yes.
There are three main reasons why you should write an about me page.
- It generates traffic
- It builds trust
- It can increase your leads
Still unsure? Let’s see these reasons in detail.
An about me page generates traffic
On all my websites, the about me page is a popular page.
It gets traffic from users who are navigating the website and it also gets organic traffic from search engines.
Usually, someone who reads an about me page will visit other pages too. This means your bounce rate should be low and this is a great opportunity to link to other important pages on your website.
An about me page builds trust
Readers love to know they can trust the source. Let’s say you wanted to buy a product or a service on a website you just found. There are different ways to see if you can trust the website.
You can build trust with:
- An about me page
- Social media channels
- An SSL certificate that makes the website secure
- And more
If the website doesn’t have any of the elements mentioned above, it does look a bit dodgy. An about me page can link to social media, tell you more about the mission or history so you can trust the brand, and learn more about them.
An about me page can increase your leads
Finally, an about me page can help you generate more leads. You could have a call-to-action button that links to your service page, or you could collect email addresses.
As I mentioned earlier, most users will navigate to another page once they read the about me page, so you can direct them exactly where you want them to be.
What to Include in the About Me Page
Now that you know how important it is to create an about me page, let’s talk about what should be included on this page.
- A way to relate to your audience
- A value proposition (what’s in it for them?)
- An image or photo
- A call-to-action
Remember when I said that your about page isn’t really about you? This is your unique opportunity to speak directly to your reader so they can relate to you and realize they’re at the right place.
There are several ways to do this, so I’ll share examples and ideas in the following sections so you can find clever ways to relate to your audience – and make it about them, not you.
About Me Examples
If you want to see a couple of examples, you can take a look at my about page on Nomad Life 101 and on A Broken Backpack.
Both pages are quite different since the niche is different.
But, we can observe a pattern.
At the very beginning, there’s a “help statement” that grabs the attention of the reader.
Then, you can find a short introduction about me. I focus on the fact that switching to a nomadic lifestyle was a scary thing to do so I can relate to my audience who haven’t done the switch yet.
After this short introduction, I’m putting the spotlight on the reader by using a bridge sentence: Which brings me to you.
In this section, I’m telling them what to expect on the site, and I focus on the audience by sharing the value proposition including extra benefits.
There’s a call-to-action at the end of the page inviting people to visit another page.
About Me Ideas
There are many ways to go about writing your about me page. In this section, you’ll find multiple ideas to create a great about page.
- You can talk about your WHY – why do you do what you do?
- You could handle your client’s objections within your about page by addressing what the customer needs to know in order to buy something from you.
- You can answer questions your readers often ask you.
- You can highlight things in your story that could inspire your audience or encourage them to take an action.
- You can tell a story that includes the problem and the solution.
- You can mention your credentials or accomplishments.
- You could add relatable details or fun facts about yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Now, you may have a few extra questions before you can get started on your about me page. So, here are some related questions and answers regarding your about page.
How long should an about me page be?
It should be a minimum of 300 words. Although, mine are a bit longer – between 400 and 600 words.
The goal here is to have enough content to make it interesting, but not too much so it doesn’t become a long bragging page about yourself.
Should I include a photo on my about me page?
While it’s not necessary, I’d recommend it. It looks more trustworthy when you can see who is behind the content and the website. It builds trust, which is why you should also use your name and not a username.
How should I name the about me page?
You can simply use “About” to name your about me page. This way it won’t be too long on your menu, but it also makes it more generic because it’s not entirely all about you. It can be about your company, your services, and more importantly, it should be about your audience too.
Final Thoughts on About Pages
Writing an about me page doesn’t have to be difficult. You can take a look at the about page within your industry to see more examples. At the end of the day, this is a page that should focus on your value proposition and a bridge between you and your audience.
While it’s an important page, you shouldn’t spend too much time on this page. You can always go back to it in the future.
Think of it as a trust page, and make sure to add everything your reader needs in order to trust you and your website.
