Before we start, let’s take a look at what a social media consultant is. Then, we’ll see how you can become one.
How to Become a Social Media Consultant
A social media consultant is basically someone who gives advice and recommendations for social media channels. The idea is to help brands and business owners to build social media strategies to increase brand awareness.
Interview with Josie Parkhouse, Social Media ConsultantÂ
Why did you want to become a digital nomad?
I decided to hit the road and become a digital nomad so that I can have a good work/life balance and the freedom to travel indefinitely. I have always wanted to travel but never have for longer than a month.Â
I have worked remotely part-time for 5 years whilst studying for a Masters and working other jobs in the UK. A couple of years ago, I realized I could travel whilst working and I made the goal of traveling full-time with this part-time social media consultancy role.
I wasn’t able to go before for a variety of reasons. I wanted to wait until I had saved enough money just in case the work dries up, I wanted to stay in the UK for a few close friends weddings and I had a few jobs and volunteer positions I wanted to see through until the end.Â
How did you get started and how long have you been on the road for?
I landed my first social media consultancy job through an internship I did for the same non-profit. I have done the role for 5 years remotely alongside other clients and jobs but only been traveling since October 2019 (two months at the time of writing).
I initially booked my one-way flight to Thailand back in January but ended up changing it to Mexico after winning a competition run by Selina (a Digital Nomad boutique hostel) to have a free road trip across Mexico for 2 weeks staying in the Selinas with 12 other Digital Nomads!Â
This was a great introduction to the lifestyle as I was able to meet other digital nomads and attend the Nomad Summit in Cancun to hear other people’s stories.Â
I hope to continue traveling for a while though and possibly supplement my income by getting new clients or another role like teaching English online.Â
How long did it take you to make a decent income?
It took me 4 years to get to the current salary I am at with my social media consultancy. I earn £900 (around USD 1160) a month give or take (as my main client is not based in the UK this figure fluctuates depending on the exchange rate).
It’s enough to live comfortably but not extravagantly whilst traveling. I have found that as long as I don’t move around too much (flights are expensive!) and stay in modest accommodation it is just about enough to cover my outgoings.
But as I am a freelancer, my roles don’t have much job security, hence why I waited until I had saved money before leaving the UK.Â
How did you land your first client?
I landed my first social media consultancy client through an internship I did for the same company after I graduated from university. I am very fortunate that the topic the non-profit focuses on is one I am really passionate about otherwise I don’t think I would have landed the contract as my background is not with social media.
I would encourage people to find something they are passionate about as it is much easier to land roles that really resonate with you.Â
Also, internships are a great opportunity to show companies what skills you can offer them.Â
The company I am with really liked the Facebook posts I did whilst interning so I started with doing those for them remotely.Â
Then after a while, I began managing their Twitter and finally their Instagram too. I began doing only a few hours a week but this increased as my responsibilities and salary increased.Â
I create images on Canva, a free online software, and I create social media posts based on the content of their website and relevant news stories. I use scheduling software so I can plan a few days or weeks in advance what I am going to post.Â
Now I have done the role for a few years I am really familiar with the tasks involved and have built up trust with the client.Â
Did you take any courses or did you use any FREE resources online?
I took a social media course during the 5 years but I honestly didn’t find it very helpful! Other than that I have muddled through and am mostly self-taught on social media.Â
Q&A – All About Social Media Jobs
Social media are pretty important nowadays. Most brands are on social media to drive traffic and to increase brand awareness. Since most people are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and/or Pinterest, it makes sense that a brand builds a social media strategy as part of their marketing plan.
Since social media evolved quickly and the algorithms change on a regular basis, having someone in charge of social media is a perfect way to build your presence online. As business owners are busy with other things, they are likely to outsource their social media channels.
To become a great social media consultant, you have to be creative and curious. Since the social media algorithms will change often, you will need to be on the top of your game. A good social media manager can write good copy and can understand the brand voice.
Some social media managers specialize in certain channels – for example – you could find someone that masters Instagram, Pinterest or Facebook or you could get someone who can handle all your social media for you. You could then decide to develop your skills regarding one platform or offer a wide range of services.
It depends on the number of clients. Usually, social media consultants are freelancers which means their work might not be secured. Depending on the number of clients and experience, they could get anything starting at USD 1000 per month.
